The blue economy presents vast opportunities but poses significant challenges, particularly workforce development. Many aspiring professionals need more exposure to the industry, access to relevant education, and guidance to navigate complex career paths. Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) offers the Peerside program, which addresses these challenges by providing a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience that immerses students in the diverse fields supporting the blue economy.
This presentation will explore how FIO’s Peerside effectively bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, focusing on four key pillars: exposure to diverse industry opportunities, science and professional development education, industry-experienced mentorship, and networking opportunities to expand employment opportunities. By providing students with direct exposure to critical industries such as marine science, boat operations, ROV technology, and engineering, the program equips them with the interdisciplinary skills necessary for success.
By integrating these elements, FIO’s Peerside program prepares students, many of whom have little prior industry experience, to meet the demands of the blue economy, ensuring a more capable and adaptable workforce for the future.
