There is an ongoing awareness that a larger workforce is required to meet the demands of the New Blue Economy. For successful growth in this economy to occur, there needs to be adequate availability of interested and trained personnel in a broad spectrum of ocean disciplines. The Florida Institute of Oceanography’s Peerside program aims to broaden ocean access through professional development and experiential learning opportunities. Program objectives are achieved through the utilization of marine technology, specifically through opportunities related to ROV design and exploration. Under these objectives, the program provides resources to break through traditional barriers, allowing for the development of a broad ocean community of students, mentors, and professionals. By providing hands-on learning activities and creating essential community connections, Peerside exposes participants to the diverse opportunities within marine technology. Through deep-sea ROV exploration and ship-to-shore science connections, essential career options in the New Blue Economy are highlighted.
